News and updates from the Coca-Cola Space Science Center's MeadWestvaco Observatory

Educator and group opportunity to preview RISO

I know there has been a few questions on what is our MeadWestvaco Interactive Observatory and how it can be used in a classroom, or informal educational situations. So I have added a special 45 min introduction to our Real-time Solar Observatory that is suitable for classroom or general audience use . During the session we view and discuss live features on the Sun, show off a little bit of the capability of the system, and finish up by talking about how the Sun effects us here on Earth. All the introduction sessions are 1 on 1 with your class/group, so you can ask us questions directly!

Are you located somewhere where night viewing might be better? Let us know we have introductions for that too!

These sessions are great for K-12 Classes, Scout meetings, PTA meetings (just think of everyone enjoying live images of the Moon!) and even Astronomy Clubs (especially during cloudy nights!)

We have many exciting programs coming in the next few months that we will talk about as they get closer.

If you would like to schedule a session, please email me at michaelj@ccssc.org

Getz's Dragon

Special Alert!

Check out tiny astronomers in action! Ms. Getz's 2nd grade class at Forrest Road Elementary in Columbus, Georgia, captured this incredible solar eruption during their RISO (Real-time Interactive Solar Observatory) session with Columbus State University's Coca-Cola Space Science Center (CCCSSC) this morning. RISO is an educational outreach program funded in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services Museums for America grant (MA-04-12-0116-12) and continued support of the MeadWestvaco Corporation. Teachers from anywhere in the world can join the CCSSC's educational community to access science standards-based activities and request online telescope sessions for their classes.
